You set up a law practice blog. You have concentrated it on a niche area of the law. You have worked on the design and the layout. You made your initial post about what you hope to accomplish. So now you ask, what should I blog about. Here are a few suggestions:
1. The top news story having an effect on your practice area. If your blog concerns divorce and a celebrity on the front page of the paper is divorcing, feel free to blog about it and relate it back to your niche. Another example, would be when the Terri Schivo controversy was raging, you could have blogged about that and the need for a medical directive and power of attorney. So read the papers (online).
2. The biggest fear in your legal field. The bankruptcy reform law was a perfect example. Congress and the President signed a new law to make bankruptcy more difficult to file after October 17, 2005. Consumer bankruptcy attorneys effectively informed the public that if bankruptcy was an option it was probably better to beat the law's enactment.
3. The big elephant in the room. There is not a legal practice area that does not have one. The big ominous creature in the room that nobody wants to talk about. The possibility of legal malpractice, for example. Courts (even if stated generically) that will not give the father custody of a child in a divorce. Hang 'em high judges. Sex for legal services. Probate for a percentage of the estate. Fees based on tax refunds. I do not know what the big elephant might be in your industry, but if you want to post, and you want to get noticed, you need to write about it. Just do not get personal.
4. The most popular book or the newest book concerning your niche. This is easy. Just get on Amazon, download some art, link to the site and tell the World what you think.
5. A clever or intriguing blog post from one of your colleagues. What this means is that you need to read what other are blogging in your niche. Link these to your site. Add them to your Google/IG or RSS page. Blog about it and TrackBack if possible.
6. Yourself. What happen to you this morning. What happened in Court. What happened in your office. Some wacky thing your client did. Advertising you might be running. New ways to contact you or communicate with your office. Types of cases you would like to see or handle. Charities with which you are involved.
7. Technology. You represent people in divorce, there is a new piece of software out that helps the client put together an inventory. You represent consumer bankruptcy clients and there is a new program that allows the client to send you a list of creditors ready for download in your bankruptcy program without the need for your staff to input it. Whatever it is, it is interesting.
8. YouTube. Regularly search YouTube for videos related to your practice niche. Embed them in your blog and write about them.
Good ideas!
