Marketing concerns both publicity and advertising. Publicity is free while advertising can be costly. So, we all should tend to those things that smack more of publicity or that generate publicity. One example of this is blogging. Apart from publicity being free it is more believable than advertising; it is a multiplier in that it tends to build on itself; and, it is more sticky, meaning that it is better remembered by people and prospects than is most advertising.
How do you get sticky marketing, including publicity?
The first task is to do something. Help somebody. Involve yourself in some activity. Sponsor something.
The second thing you should do is write and distribute. News releases are good. Blogging is great. It is part of the multiplying factor of good marketing and publicity.
Create your own verbal commercial. When somebody ask you what you do for a living you need to have something that causes what you do and you to stick in their mind. It has got to leave people wanting more. Not only that, record it, upload it to YouTube and embed it in your blog.
Next, kill your website. What use to be exciting and new is not any longer. These site are too often dull and boring. They do not excite anybody. They are usually out of date. They are not a resource for any substantial information. They are often expensive to maintain. Just use your blog.
Lastly, if you want your marketing to stick, if you want to be viewed as a good and caring lawyer, just try being a good, kind, humble and caring human being. It is the best sticky marketing there is. I have recently blogged about these rough and tumble attorneys who believe being obnoxious and loud creates a lot of attention and press. This might be so. But, ask yourself what kind of image is sticking to the prospects mind. People that will act out badly as against others will act out badly against the prospect down the road if it fans their egos. Do not think that prospects do not know that if you are capable of calling others names that you are capable of calling the prospect names as well. So, I repeat, it is okay to be entertaining as long as you show a willingness to play nice with others.
The impressions we leave with others are indeed sticky.
Good or bad, people don't forget what they encounter on the web and they're increasingly apt to give others their opinion in a heartbeat.
Blogs are no longer just the future or a sign of the revolution, today we expect blogs. If I can't easily find a link from your website to your blog, I instantly know that you don't quite see IT yet, or are hesitant to the idea of becoming as transparent, real and as open as a blog demands.
So yeah, kill your 1oh site or better yet evolve it into a web based application that can actually allow your visitors to do something useful, such as the ability to monitor their case 24/7.
Thanks for sharing another excellent post Chuck! Hope your Thanksgiving was relaxing.
