Law.Com posted an article on lawyer e-mail etiquette. It is helpful. It says lawyers should avoid things like bouncing smiley faces, pink backgrounds and flying banners. But, I have a few thoughts of my own that lawyers should avoid. In e-mailing lawyers should avoid:
1. Ending their emails with Xs and Os. You should not love your clients or opposing counsel that much.
2. Avoid using Internet abbreviations like LOL (laugh out loud) and SYAO (sue your ass off). Never professional.
3. Signing your name as John Q. Lawyer, BA, JD, SOB.
4. Beginning your email to opposing counsel with the greeting, "Yo, faggot, what's happenin'".
5. The "Out of Office" reply should not read, "Left to go drinking and chase skirts, be back manana.
6. When you are complaining about what a dick one party is to another party, do not hit the "reply all" button or link on your email.
7. Avoid emoticons of a smiley face giving someone the finger (Justice Scalia).
8. And associates, please stop sharing ideas over your email as to the many ways to kill the senior partner.
If you have any ideas of what would inappropriate, let me know.
Damn, you're funny sometimes.
