If your child's school is having an open house do not be jealous of me. For you see, I still have one child in high school and that school is having an open house at 7:00 tonight. I have been to a lot of these open houses as I have had four children go through this high school. And, here is the normal picture of most parents attending. Everybody needs to be in child's classroom at 7:00 p.m. Most are not. They are busy running from the parking lot to meet the schedule because they have generally just completed their long commute from Houston, Texas back to The Woodlands. They have had to rush home to pick up their spouse or significant other, who as well just completed their commute. When they get to the classroom they look stressed, tired and hungry because they did not have time to eat dinner, much less prepare dinner.
Now, my wife and I work at home and are only a few miles from the high school. So we work until about 5:00 p.m., then prepare dinner while watching the news (salmon to those who want to know), eat a leisurely meal, spruce up a little, and get over to the school in place in plenty of time to sign in and greet the teachers.
In about an hour and a half we are back home and our night has been barely disrupted. As for the commuters, they are off to a late dinner somewhere, feeling a little ragged, only to get home in time for bed so they can start the whole process over again tomorrow.
So sad. But, I think it illustrates better than anything one of the many privileges in moving your law practice home.
