If you are thinking about applying to law schools for the Fall 2009 or Winter 2009 class (for the limited number of law schools that take students mid year), it is best not to go into the test cold.
The LSAT might very well not test learned knowledge, but that does not mean it is unstructured or that you cannot prepare for the exam. In fact, you had better spend some time preparing on how to take the exam. There are a number of courses and groups and adviser that can help you do this. I know, for example, that Kaplan and others performed FREE practice exams on the University of Texas campus when my oldest daughter, now in law school, was first considering taking the LSAT. At least take advantage of these opportunities.
Ann Levine is such a law school consultant that has helped over 700 people apply to law schools since 2004, and has the blog Law School Expert. She says on the I.blog.LSAT, "It’s a huge mistake to take the LSAT cold. Because you’re allowed to take the test 3 times in a two-year period, and because law schools are – for the most part – looking at the higher of multiple scores, some applicants make the huge mistake of taking the LSAT once just to 'get the fell of it'".
Do not do this.
