Sometimes I think there is just something wrong with us. We drive huge vehicles, often times with just one or two people in them. We thrive on huge meals, with portion sizes way out of control. You use way to much energy for the benefit we receive. It is not only not green and not necessary, it is extraordinarily expensive.
This is especially true of the space we occupy. Think about these statistics I found recently:
1. Our beds are empty two-thirds of the time;
2. Our living rooms are empty seven-eights of the time; and,
3. Our office buildings are empty one-half of the time.
We need to downshift, I suppose. You would think we could all work to eliminate much of this unused space in our lives, and save ourselves some money.
Could we not find a way to downsize our master bedrooms a little into something that is a little more cozy? Could we not find a way to eliminate our living rooms? Could we not find a way to combine our office space with some of this space to cut down on commuting, but also to eliminate all of the cost of comes with commercial space?
I not only think we can. I know we can. And we can live more abundant lives in doing so.
Absolutely we should all work on this! My living room is my office and it is occupied a lot more than 1/8 of the time! But when I worked downtown, instead of at home, that probably was a pretty close stat for me.
Too bad far too many people I know don't get this. I have several single friends who own their own homes - as large or larger than my modest home, but they live their alone and my household is for 5 people! It's crazy and I hope we all start to live the less is more concept sooner rather than later.
