Great post which I agree with almost entirely BUT (there's always a big but) most attorneys need a professional place to meet their clients (and other attorneys, claims adjusters etc) other than their house. When I officed in Houston I used an office suites type place (Abby) which only cost about $250 a month. It was well worth the price. I still did all my work in my home office but met clients, held depositions etc at the office suites. It gave me a professional appearance and although I agree that appearance is not everything it is something that has to be considered.

I now live in the Seattle area and am thinking of opening a practice here & in spite of having all the virtual capabilities I still don't feel comfortable bringing people into my home.

Last year I had another solo as an opponent in a family case, who showed up at the hearing and promptly set up his iPad on the table. I was impressed. But then I was disappointed--not once did he even look at whatever he had on the screen, and I wondered what the heck he was using it for other than as a prop. As solos we have to watch our "beans" a lot more carefully. I am still trying to justify the cost of an iPad or any other tablet, but find that I can't; my laptop,my desktop or the smartphone seem to do just fine for what I do right now. I guess we just become dazzled like anyone else!
