The truth of the matter is that in this day and age I receive and place fewer telephone calls. I can communicate with clients, scheduling hearings, and argue with opposing counsel in so many more ways than in the past. Ways that do not require me to be tethered at or anywhere close to my office (which is a room in my home).
Further, as communication gets easier, wireless and more mobile we are migrating from being spare room tycoons to a no room tycoons. Or, maybe those rooms are becoming more diverse.
Case in point, one of the favorite passions of my girlfriend and I is to drive the back roads of Texas, while there are still back roads. (The state's population is exploding). But, I still need to practice law. I still need to stay connected.
You might have enjoyed the movie Lincoln Lawyer, about a criminal defense attorney who operates around Los Angeles out of his black Lincoln Town Car. My girlfriend and I now like to laugh comparing ourselves as Prius lawyers.
I have my Android smart phone. She carries an iPad. It is about all we need to maintain our practices while on the road.
We have also taken to referring to our Prius as our conference room because it seems to be where we take and make most of our calls. Google Voice forwards my incoming office calls to my cell phone, and we can answer most issues by reviewing files on her iPad. It helps that Prius has an amazing hands free phone system. The sound and clarity are wonderful, when we are not listening to our satellite radio.
Sometimes we have to pull the Prius over to look at something online and to have a more in depth discussion. It is for safety reasons, but that is okay.
As a Prius lawyers we both feel quite liberated.
